capitalizing it & the word beacon too<br/>
which he changes to pillar in another place<br/>
which leads me to believe it may simply be the name for a particular<br/>
boundary marker<br/>

for some reason the term beacon is widely used in southern africa & at<br/>
least as far north as the zambezi to mean some kind of a boundary marker<br/>
the likes of which i have not yet seen & can only imagine<br/>
unless the word just refers to a sequence of intervisible pillars<br/>
because i can sort of imagine the word being used of sighting without<br/>
necessarily involving any sort of actual illumination<br/>

but otherwise tis yet another mystery<br/>

brownlies african encyclopedia when i get home next month<br/>
