yes he spells mpundweni this way twice
capitalizing it & the word beacon too
which he changes to pillar in another place
which leads me to believe it may simply be the name for a particular
boundary marker

for some reason the term beacon is widely used in southern africa & at
least as far north as the zambezi to mean some kind of a boundary marker
the likes of which i have not yet seen & can only imagine
unless the word just refers to a sequence of intervisible pillars
because i can sort of imagine the word being used of sighting without
necessarily involving any sort of actual illumination

but otherwise tis yet another mystery

for improving on all of our africa data however i will be checking
brownlies african encyclopedia when i get home next month
so hang in for further details
