Martin,

A tried and tested rule in boundary determination is that monuments take precedence over measurements. In the future Denmark and Sweden may have to contend with the fact that the monument on the bridge does constitute evidence of the boundary from the past.

One way to overcome this in the future is for both countries to agree that the monument does not indicate the location of the boundary. There is an overriding precedent that boundaries by mutual agreement extinguish all previous evidence of boundary location. The key word here is agreement.
