Steve and Dan -

I just wanted to clarify that the USGS provided no technical assistance of
any sort to us to make our maps available on the Web. We purchased a set
of
digital topographic maps from the USGS just like any business partner or
end
user could. All of the technology to deal with multiple map scales,
projections, sizes, etc., and to merge the maps and make them available
seamlessly on the Web was developed entirely by us with no help from the
USGS.

We would love to do exactly the same thing for the Canadian maps; we would
be very happy to start with the limited set of those maps that are
currently
available in digital form. We are very happy to do any technical work
ourselves. The single enormous obstacle to us doing that is the Canadian
government's insistence on charging royalties for the display and delivery
of those maps after we've done all that work at no cost to them. If the
Canadian government could remove that obstacle we could start seeing
Canadian maps up on the TopoZone in a few weeks.
