to all,

i have sat at the green table...on both sides of the border. i was on a
business trip to seoul with a free weekend. it was in 1991. i called the uso
office there to find out what they had scheduled for visitors. they
mentioned the trip to the border village of panumunjon...and i jumped on it.
it was reasonably priced and took about 8 hours...3 hours each to and
fro..and about 2 hours there.

the trip up there and back, while only about 30 or so miles took awhile
because there were no highway. it was basically city-like streets...with a
few military check points.

we actually spent about 5 or so minutes in a border straddling hut. there
are about 8 of them. the group visited only one. it was a tour group of
about 30 or so. 6 in the hut with a guard at any one time.

the hut has a door that opens to north korea, one that opens to south korea.
each is always open. the soldier who accompanies you in, plants himself in
front of the north korean door, while visitors are free to walk around the
hut. there is only a table in the hut. it was pretty tense. the soldier is
not sociable at all. he doesn't show any emotion, does not engage with any
of the visitors. people were taking pictures of each other, that was about
it.

after being in the hut, the group is led back to a visitors area...and the
next group is led in. after all the groups have been in the hut, we were all
led back to the u.s. army post that is at the border. we then ate at a
military snack bar.

i remember feeling quite emotional about being in north korea and also very
cautious...always with an eye toward the north korean door.

an incredible experience from almost 9 years ago...but it was like yesterday
in so many ways.
