September 17, 2000 - The easternmost point in Pennsylvania is on the west bank of the Delaware River about 800 meters northeast of the New Jersey - New York - Pennsylvania tri-state. I approached this point by exiting I-84W at the Matamoras, PA exit. At the bottom of the exit ramp I turned right (NE) onto Pennsylvania Avenue and then right (SE) onto 10th Street at a fruit and vegetable stand. I followed 10th Street until it ended at Airport Park, as defunct landing strip shown on the topo map is now called. At the southeast end of the landing strip a road continues down the river bank with the promise of easy traveling but this hope is quickly dashed by an earthen barricade at a small bridge. I continued on foot along the riverbank road, alway taking the fork that stayed closest to the water. Near the objective the road becomes a frayed end of foot trails leading various dierctions through grass and weeds. Boots and long pants are highly recommended due to numerous potholes, poison ivy, and briars. The water was running high during my visit so I had to retreat from my first shore access and try further upstream and closer to the objective. The easternmost "point" is ambiguous because there is a length of perhaps 200 meters of shoreline running nearly north and south. I suspect the exact easternmost point will be located at various points along this stretch under different water conditions. Using my compass and sighting a north-south line, I identified a small peninsula of rocks as the easternmost point and took several photos. Across the river and slightly downstream from the objective, headstones can been seen in the Laurel Grove Cemetery. The NJ-NY-PA tri-state stone is at the tip of the cemetery peninsula.
