Under the Reunification treaty in 1990, the German government is pledged
to upkeep all Soviet memorials in German Territory. Hence the site is
still intact and kept under police watch (though not a military guard
like the Russians had). After Rudolf Hess died in 1988, they lost
Spandau prison which was subsequently demolished and a shopping mall was
built in its place. There are also 2 other Soviet sites in Berlin which
are preserved. Indeed renovated. They are: Treptower Park, and the
graveyard in Schoenholz. Schonholz is scarcely known to tourists (it's
kind of creepy) but worth visiting. Strangely enough it is easier to get
to now that the Wall is gone. Take the West Berliner S-Bahn to Schonholz
and get a bus to the site.
Also, for Soviet Era fans, Karl Marx Allee (former Stalinallee) is now a
perserved monument. And Volkspark Friedrichshain is still my favorite
Socialist park. Plenty of East German statues and picnic spots to visit,
not to mention the ultra tacky "Sport und Erholungszentrum" or "Sport
and Recreation Center" or SEZ.

Ivan got the last laugh after all :) !
