>you ... a very definitive description of the history of that location....

this casts a whole new light on the try for the point of beginning
& anyone pursuing this point or topic really should read all 12 pages

what they say in a nutshell is lots of luck because there have been a
number of different markers & monuments in the area & everything has
gotten moved around as well as obliterated & lost track of several times
each
& then probably even inundated by a dam
since the point was first established in 1785 by a wooden stake driven into
the flat area just above the right bank of the river at that time

a 1960 resurvey & try by the local city engineer may have been successful
but he died & his field notes were never found

a 1966 retracement of the ohpa line & reestablishment of the point of
beginning by the blm found no evidence of the original

etc etc

particularly problematic is the 1112 foot distance mentioned on the
historic monument due south from it to the point of beginning
& the author suggests without explanation that the true distance may be
only about 910 feet
which would effectively pull the point out of the river & put it back on
dry land
but he admits he doesnt really know

btw
i have noticed that the topo indicates the modern section corner
corresponding to the point of beginning approx 1011 feet south of the
monument
& this is the area i still want to examine
but with fewer illusions now about the chances for success

& the ohpawv tristate point does still appear to be within the river about
135 feet south of the present right bank if the topo can be believed

i will be interested & glad to check for this may well be so
tho watersheds sometimes disregard & cross a crest line at gaps upon it

i believe argentina & chile may even have come to blows over just such a
difference of understanding about their common boundary several thousand
miles down the same crest or watershed line

it is amusing tho to see this benign version of confusion & commotion
& all this paperwork & expense
which would never even have occurred if the cartographical error hadnt
first been made & someone hadnt then proposed to unname what we already
know is elk pee pond
& to perpetuate the mistaken belief that a survey angle point does occur in
the vicinity
for idmtwy is after all not an angle point but only the intersection of the
crest by a single survey line

there is much more of interest in this batch of enclosures about the map
mistake or rather mistakes
& i am laughing even harder now to realize i was misled that day by not 1
but 2 major usgs errors
but best if i keep it simple now

thanx
happily studying your book got me thinking about that again in time to pull
it off

>settled the issue.

not yet tho i am glad to learn of your success
& will tap them now if the nh state library fails
or in future

that was an interesting example & highlight from your low point book too

there is so much more i could mention
& would like to do just that another time

for now thank you again jack

it is great to be in touch with you
