The normal positional accuracy of topographic maps is often considered to
be about 0.5 mm (1/50 inch), and so a 1:25,000 scale map can show
positions only to within about 12.5 m. So, a 3 m long line would appear as
a point. A 3 m wide stream if plotted to true scale on a 1:25,000 scale
map would appear only 0.12 mm wide, too narrow to draw and still see it.
Cartographers exaggerate the widths of linear features in order that they
can be seen, or delete them completely.

I'll certainly have to go to this place next time I'm in the neighborhood!
