My guess is they buried the Clark Monument right under the spot where
it stood. On a recent trip to Delaware and Maryland I discovered
that there is an original Mason-Dixon marker buried under a manhole
cover on Rt. 279 just Southwest of Newark, DE. It is shown as Arc
Stone 1 on the following map:

Heavy traffic precluded opening the cover for a peek.
