still flushed with yesterdays success at marius
i continued cruising southwest down the atlantic seaboard this morning on
the magic carpet express
setting my sights next on nyrius
where i received another shock

for the usgs topo indicates that the interstate boundary
namely nyri or new york rhode island in the present case
not only reaches the red arc line but actually runs straight across it
oops
& in fact stretches way past it & out to sea
oh no

indeed these disjointed & conflicting simultaneous versions of reality were
the last thing i was expecting

it aint a pretty sight & it is many kb besides
but if you would like to see this the third & most dramatic contradiction
of my theory in 4 tries
then the following long wait is for you
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=41.2364&lon=-71.964&size=1&s=200

so i had to ask again what really is the limit of state waters here

was the cartographer aware of the meanings of the lines he was drawing

or am i not understanding their meanings myself

this calls for renewed openmindedness & vigilance because anything really
is possible here until absolute confirmation can be found

indeed i have previously found the usgs to be in error about the positions
of at least 3 tristate points & perhaps several more than that
sometimes owing to outdatedness but sometimes to outright blunders also

& since these federal waters tripoints are a much subtler matter than the
regular tristate points
i would not be surprised to see the usgs blowing a much greater percentage
of them

but i realize too that i am way out on a limb here now
& my ass is hanging out the window besides
needlessly
publicly
as i myself might well be the one who is blowing it

so anyway lets try the next point njnyus & see what happens

another spectacular miss & large kb
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=40.498&lon=-73.9894&s=100&size=l
where it is most probable that a change in topo quads is what causes the
njny or new jersey new york interstate boundary to end just shy of the arc
line

this preposterous situation underscores the fact that production standards
do vary widely among the usgs maps themselves
& moreover that irregularities & anomalies of the type we have been seeing
really are the rule rather than the exception

so even tho confounded now 4 times out of 5
i still continue enthusiastically down the coast toward denjus

& happily at denj or the delaware new jersey interstate boundary
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.8251&lon=-75&size=s&s=200
the expected arc junction is very nearly or actually perfect on the map
at approximately north lat 38d 48m 41s & west long 75d 00m 51s btw
& thus provides a second instance of clear support for my theory & desire

so breathing a little easier again now
with 2 out of 6 tries pretty much right on the money
& at least 1 & perhaps all of the misses negligible
there is enough reason to play again another day
& fortunately 12 more points to try
