thats the dalton hinsdale washington tripoint as shown
here
http://www.berkshireweb.com/themap/index.html
& here
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4697200&e=650652&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25

we easily found the intended jumpoff point where the
hiwa town line crosses pittsfield road just above or
southeast of upper sackett reservoir at about 510
meters above sea level
since there was a town line sign & pavement change
just there
& even a dire warning not to trespass on the reservoir
property

but as there were no blazes along hiwa
& as we imagined the restriction might apply only to
the town of hinsdale where the reservoir actually is
situated & not to the town of washington
we conceived the idea of maintaining as much of a
sense of innocence & innocent passage as possible by
endeavoring to skirt hinsdale entirely & keeping to
the washington side of the town line

but cloudiness obscured the correct bearing for doing
so

so we set out on this difficult dead reckoned half
mile bushwhack try on a bearing derived from the angle
of the road intersection alone
while taking special care not to do the easy thing &
trail off any distance downhill or northward toward
the reservoir

but we soon reached
at about the 100th pace
just the easy slippage into jeopardy that we were
hoping to avoid
in the form of a lovely trail bearing wnw right down
the hill & conveniently bridging the first stream you
see depicted there

but we immediately joined this trail anyway
drifting onto the surely prohibited hinsdale side of
the town line
in the hopes of a better turn of trail just ahead

this was after all deep wilderness
so the risk was very slight a full quarter of a mile
away from the actual reservoir

& as we continued to drift northwest
by the time the pace count reached 300 we reached a
second bridge

which proved to cross not a second brook but just a
second channel of the same brook

for we had just traversed a 200 yard island while
slipping farther down toward the reservoir

& this was getting us both seriously off course & into
greater jeopardy at the same time

so i took the first opportunity to correct the course
& trailed off on a vestigial wood road that led
southwest fairly perpendicularly up the hill toward
the broad shoulder that is shown protruding into
hinsdale from washington above the 540 meter elevation

& scaled straight up the steepest part shown there on
the topo

& then continued to grope our way topographically &
without benefit of actual bearings
as far as the second stream shown on the topo
which we reached at about the 700th pace
& then ascended to its head as indicated on the topo
which we reached & finally skirted at about the 800th
pace

from there i again corrected course topographically by
climbing as directly as possible up the hill near
whose summit the target lay

& once we reached what felt like the broad leveling
off that is indicated on the topo at the 564 meter
plane
i set a new course toward the next brook
which is shown dry on the topo but was a trickle
& which i figured brought us to within a few hundred
feet of the target after having zigzagged about 1300
paces toward fulfilling the 880 pace projected crowfly

& from there i set a final course toward the almost
visible knolltop
expecting the tripoint monument to heave into view off
the starboard bow at roughly 200 foot range at any
moment
when i paused to catch my breath & recheck the map &
wait for jc to catch up

& as i explained my present working hypothesis to her
& continued scanning the scene for anything unusual
especially to my right
she pointed straight ahead of us to the marker at
about 30 foot range

or actually to the 2 markers

but i assume the taller one is the true one

& they occupied a position in relation to the visible
hilltop that surprised me in view of their depictions
on the topo

but no matter

& she said
thats it
& walked straight ahead to them
& climbed up onto them for the pic
taking a bow while apparently levitating at the same
time
class aa at least

all in all
an extremely demanding & gratifying point under
difficult conditions
but quite a fine patchwork quilt of ingenuity &
persistence & just plain good luck in the end
