Brendan -
Yes, I kind of messed up when I mentioned the Cypriot
bases with Guantanamo, Porkkala and the Chinese
territories. What I meant was that like Porkkala, the
others, including the Cypriot one were bases that a
powerful country took in a smaller country. All the
examples I thought should be some sort of special
fragments as the host countries didn't really control
them. However, I should have mentioned that the
Cypriot base is truly sovereign, while the others are
not. Thanks for the great maps, by the way. By the
way, do you know how I can go on trying to buy, if I
can afford it, the book you gave as a prize for the
quiz.

Neutral territory and others -
There are some interesting facts on the neutral
territory between Gibraltar and Spain in Gideon's book
I was aware of Isle of Pheasants being a condominium,
but I wasn't sure exactly what the adiministrative
structure was, so I didn't mention it. There should
have been a English-French territory in the pacific
which became independent as Vanuatu. There possibly
is a jointly administrative territory between Oman and
UAE, as UAE maps show a territory distinct from both
countries in Masfut.
Some other odd territory in history is the Trieste
territory after World War II and Central Vienna at the
same time. Many of us forget that Austria was divided
like Germany and Eastern Austria surrounded Vienna,
which was divided like Berlin. However, the innermost
square mile was a jointly administered territory
touching the territory of the four powers. Russia
actually considered making Eastern Austria an
independent territory like Eastern Germany, but gave
up in 1955 after they decided it was just too small.

Non-sovereign foreign territories -
Let's also include Longwood Farm in St Helena as a
non-sovereign foreign territory. It's a French farm
where Napoleon died in British territory. I think
Catudal also mentions a radio station and a war
memorial in Berlin that were similar.
