ghost is basically just a short way of saying historic or no longer extant
but i like to say it also because it brings things back to life in the
present somewhat

the state is connecticut

it owned & controlled nearly a third of pennsylvania til 1786
aka west more land county
& perhaps a tenth of ohio til 1800
aka the western reserve
both discontiguous with each other & the mother state

similarly
all of maine was an exclave of massachusetts til 1819
a special problem because the exclave was 4 times as large as the ma

better yet but different
bermuda was an exclave of virginia til 1624
when virginia legally extended from bermuda westward to cape mendocino on
the pacific

but those 3 or 4 in all are the only ghost exclaves of the individual
united states i am aware of
